en.Wedoany.com Reported - Egypt has completed Africa's first trial of mobile communication services in the 6GHz band, conducted in collaboration with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), Telecom Egypt, and Huawei, making the country the first in Africa to trial the 6GHz band (also known as U6GHz) for mobile communications.

During the trial, demonstrations included operating Africa's first mobile base station using the 6GHz band and completing the first data call over this spectrum. Per-user data transmission speeds reached approximately 1.7Gbps, demonstrating the band's potential to deliver higher speeds, increase network capacity, and improve service quality, particularly in areas with high network traffic.

The U6GHz spectrum is among the bands being evaluated globally for high-capacity mobile services and is expected to support the continued evolution of 5G and future mobile technologies. The trial aims to help Egypt assess how to leverage this spectrum to address growing data demand and increasingly dense connectivity requirements.

The NTRA stated that this initiative is part of its broader efforts to evaluate emerging telecommunications technologies and ensure the efficient utilization of spectrum resources. The authority regards spectrum as a national strategic asset and believes the successful demonstration enhances Egypt's readiness to adopt future technologies, solidifying its position in spectrum management across Africa.

The authority also noted that applications such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, virtual reality, augmented reality, and cloud computing could benefit from additional high-capacity spectrum. According to the NTRA, the technology can deliver faster and more reliable connectivity for consumers, businesses, and government entities, while supporting Egypt's broader digital transformation goals and its strategic direction to become a regional hub for digital infrastructure and telecommunications.

Mohamed Shamroukh, Executive President of the NTRA, stated that the 6GHz U6GHz band has been identified as one of the strategic bands in Egypt's national long-term spectrum plan for 2030-2035, currently being developed. This trial provides a significant opportunity to evaluate the band's capabilities for high-capacity mobile services and determine how it can contribute to future communications infrastructure.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of Egypt's ongoing efforts to expand spectrum resources for mobile operators. In February 2026, Egypt allocated a total of 410MHz of additional spectrum to its four mobile operators in a deal valued at nearly $3.5 billion, aimed at supporting network development, improving 5G performance, and enhancing connectivity, as part of Egypt's 2026-2030 spectrum strategy.

Telecom Egypt confirmed its participation in the 6GHz trial alongside the NTRA and Huawei, stating that the demonstration is part of its strategy to invest in advanced technologies to improve customer experience and deliver higher-quality telecommunications services.

This trial is not a commercial deployment of 6GHz mobile services but rather a technical assessment of the spectrum's potential. Its results are expected to inform Egypt's long-term spectrum planning as the country prepares for rising data consumption and next-generation mobile and digital services.
