Indonesia's ION Network Deploys Ciena Equipment for Jakarta-Singapore Submarine Cable, Capacity 288Tbps
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Ciena announced on Thursday that Indonesian operator ION Network (Parsaoran Global Datatrans) is deploying WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical technology on its new ION Cable System 1 (ICS1) submarine cable system, which connects Jakarta and Singapore.

Spanning 2,000 kilometers, ICS1 is built on the Ciena 6500 platform. With WL6e coherent optical technology, it delivers transmission services of up to 1.2 Tbps per wavelength and end-to-end capacity of up to 24 Tb/s. The submarine cable system uses two fiber pairs across six cable segments, bringing total capacity to 288 Tbps.
Ciena stated that ICS1 also leverages its Layer 0 (L0) control plane capabilities to ensure high service availability and operational efficiency.
ION Network Chief Technology Officer Daniel Simanjuntak said ICS1 will enhance network reliability for more than 250,000 households across Bali, Java, and Sumatra. In a statement, he noted that with the new transmission network, the company will better develop fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services and extend connectivity support to more islands across Indonesia.
Alex Wong, Ciena's Regional Managing Director for ASEAN, added that these optical technologies will enable the network to effectively address the projected bandwidth demand driven by AI and cloud applications.
Previously, ION Network had deployed Ciena equipment on two other submarine cable systems: B3JS (Jakarta-Bangka-Bintan-Batam-Singapore) and BDMCS (Batam-Dumai-Medan). ICS1 will be laid on the seabed and along protected terrestrial routes in Sumatra, with the network scheduled to enter service by the end of this year.
ICS1 is one of several recent submarine cable projects aimed at boosting Indonesia's international bandwidth through direct connections to Singapore. MoraRepublic and Chinese submarine cable company HMN Tech are building the Moratelindo International Cable System-3 (MIC-3), which will connect Singapore and Batam.
Telin, the international business arm of Telkom Indonesia, is developing the Nongsa-Changi submarine cable with BW Digital and the Indonesia Singapore Cable System (INSICA) with Singtel. Super Sistem is building its Super Sistem Batam–Singapore (SSBS) submarine cable system, which is part of the Barat Timur Indonesia (BTI) cable project jointly deployed by Super Sistem and APTelecom, connecting Batam, Jakarta, and Manado through seven landing stations. SSBS will directly connect NeutraDC's data center in Singapore with its Tier III data center in Batam, the latter being co-built by NeutraDC and Singtel's Nxera.
