Zayo and NVIDIA Build Over 8,000 Miles of New Fiber Across North America to Support AI Factories

The company is building more than 8,000 miles of new long-haul fiber routes across the fastest-growing AI corridors in North America, while significantly expanding its existing infrastructure.

Zayo and NVIDIA expand network capacity to support AI factories in North America

AI factories are reshaping global network infrastructure demands at an unprecedented scale, with long-haul fiber becoming critical to connecting increasingly distributed AI workloads. Today, many emerging AI corridors face scarce or entirely absent long-haul capacity, and building this infrastructure is one of the industry's most complex challenges. Zayo's buildout will deliver six new long-haul routes spanning emerging AI corridors, along with network expansions in 10 high-demand markets.

Zayo stated that AI cannot scale broadly if only the largest hyperscale cloud providers have access to connectivity. Emerging cloud providers (neoclouds), frontier model developers, and enterprises in industries such as healthcare, finance, and manufacturing are increasingly relying on the high-capacity network foundation enabled by its expansion.

Over the past 18 months, Zayo has significantly scaled its AI-focused network buildout, with construction and expansion projects now covering more than 15,000 route miles across North America. The company recently completed the acquisition of Crown Castle Fiber Solutions, adding 90,000 metro route miles and 40,000 on-net enterprise sites, strengthening its metro density for AI inference workloads. Zayo also launched the AI Infrastructure Blueprint, a framework for connecting training, inference, and interconnection environments within the AI ecosystem.

Zayo CEO Steve Smith said that AI is fundamentally changing where and how network infrastructure is built across the United States. The company has invested heavily in modeling where AI-driven demand is likely to emerge and expanding infrastructure ahead of that demand. As AI adoption accelerates and compute demand grows across the ecosystem, the need for new network corridors and scalable connectivity is rising. While most market players remain focused on expanding existing routes, Zayo is among the few providers building new routes at the locations and scale required for long-term AI growth while simultaneously adding capacity to existing infrastructure.

Dylan Patel, CEO of SemiAnalysis, noted that the next constraint for AI is not just compute power, but the ability to connect distributed AI infrastructure at scale. As GPU clusters, AI factories, and hyperscale cloud deployments expand beyond traditional data center hubs, long-haul fiber is becoming a critical link in the AI supply chain.

Vladimir Troy, Vice President of AI Infrastructure Engineering at NVIDIA, said that networking is rapidly becoming as important as compute itself. The collaboration between Zayo and NVIDIA aims to combine large-scale network infrastructure expertise with accelerated computing capabilities in the AI space, building the connectivity backbone that supports sustained innovation across the ecosystem.

Steve Smith added, speaking of emerging cloud providers, that network capacity is a prerequisite for customers to access compute infrastructure on demand. As AI infrastructure becomes more distributed, having high-capacity connectivity in the right markets is becoming key to how quickly neoclouds can bring new GPU capacity online and respond to customer demand.

Bob Laliberte, Principal Analyst for Networking and Observability at theCUBE Research, believes this move is not merely a network expansion, but a strategic initiative to support the distributed AI ecosystem. By partnering with NVIDIA and building additional capacity across key AI corridors, Zayo is enabling hyperscale cloud providers, neoclouds, and enterprise AI deployments to access the WAN connectivity they need to scale.
