en.Wedoany.com Reported - Portugal's Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing announced this Friday that the Green Railway Pass (Passe Ferroviário Verde, PFV) will be rolled out on urban rail services in Porto and Lisbon starting from the third week of September. For a monthly fee of €20, users can use the PFV in Porto as an alternative to the Andante card, and in Lisbon as an alternative to the Navegante card, for travel on the urban rail network.

This timing aligns with European Mobility Week (Semana Europeia da Mobilidade, September 16–22). With this expansion, the PFV will be usable across all rail networks nationwide, excluding Alfa Pendular trains and Intercidades first-class travel.

Infrastructure Minister Miguel Pinto Luz stated in a LinkedIn post that PFV users can save up to €480 per year, describing the measure as aimed at "simplifying public transport, reducing household costs, and encouraging more sustainable mobility." The government estimates the measure will have a financial impact of €1.5 million. The Ministry of Infrastructure stated that this serves as an "important incentive" for the use of public transport networks in the two metropolitan areas, while also helping to curb private car usage.

For users switching from Andante or Navegante to the PFV, annual savings amount to €240. However, in the comments section of Pinto Luz's LinkedIn post, citizens have already questioned the government's decision, warning of current "overcrowding" on trains, with particular concerns about services operated by Fertagus in the Lisbon metropolitan area.

The measure was initially announced by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro on August 14 during the Pontal celebrations in Quarteira.
