Drilling will occur at two sites—Bonjol 1 in Kampung Tampang and Bonjol 3 in Sungai Limau—targeting geothermal fluids with a temperature of approximately 150°C, classified as medium-enthalpy. Sigit Widiatmoko, Site Manager of MGSu: “The process will take time, and the power plant is expected to be operational by 2032.” The project aims to deliver sustainable energy while fostering regional development.
Local authorities in Pasaman Regency support the initiative, viewing it as a catalyst for economic growth. Regent Sabar AS: “Pasaman and West Sumatra have often been considered unattractive for investment. However, the presence of PT Medco Geothermal can erase this stigma, providing more regional income and creating jobs for the locals.” Sigit emphasized that the project will prioritize local hiring, with MGSu supplying specialized expertise.
The initiative is expected to boost multiple sectors, including transportation, agriculture, culinary, and creative industries, potentially transforming Bonjol into a tourist destination. Yusnimar, Head of the Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Agency (DPMPTSP) of Pasaman Regency, expressed support for additional geothermal projects in Cubadak and Panti, reinforcing the region’s commitment to sustainable development.
Earlier in 2025, PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal launched the 35-MW Ijen geothermal power plant in West Java, marking the region’s first geothermal facility. The Bonjol project aligns with efforts to expand renewable energy and drive economic benefits in West Sumatra.
