India's GMR Airports to Invest $2 Billion in Expanding New Delhi and Hyderabad Airports
en.Wedoany.com Reported - GMR Airports plans to invest $2 billion in expanding airport facilities in New Delhi and Hyderabad as part of its modernization program. After the upgrade, Hyderabad Airport's annual passenger capacity will increase from the current 34 million to approximately 80 million, more than double its existing capacity. By annual passenger volume, GMR Airports is India's largest airport operator; its competitor Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, which is the largest by number of airports, reportedly plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to boost passenger capacity.

Company executives stated that the expansions in New Delhi and Hyderabad may only be the beginning of a broader modernization plan, which will subsequently cover other assets in the portfolio. GMR Airports currently operates 6 airports in India, 1 in the Philippines, and has 1 airport under construction in Greece. Investment plans for the new Nagpur airport, which the group took over in June 2026, are also under discussion.
Aeroports de Paris SA holds a 26.5% stake in GMR Airports. The group stated that it will focus on bidding for domestic airport projects that the Indian government plans to sell, and there are currently no discussions regarding the redevelopment of overseas airport projects. The company said this expansion is part of its broader efforts in airport operations, maintenance, and related real estate development.
Executives also stated that even if the Indian government adjusts policies to allow airport operators to run airlines, the Hyderabad-based GMR Group is not inclined to enter the aviation business. The Indian government is reportedly considering such policy changes to promote competition, with IndiGo and Air India currently controlling nearly 90% of the domestic market combined. The group stated that rather than operating an airline, it prefers to maintain its focus on core airport operations and ancillary services.
