en.Wedoany.com Reported - Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), operated by the Adani Group, has informed India's Ministry of Civil Aviation in a letter of its plan to commence demolition of the northern section of Terminal 1-B at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on January 15, 2027. To facilitate construction, flight allocations have begun shifting to Terminal 2 and Navi Mumbai International Airport. The airport has an annual passenger handling capacity of over 50 million and processes more than 950 flights daily.

Terminal 1 has been in operation for nearly 80 years, and portions of it have already been demolished as redevelopment plans progress. Currently, Terminals 1 and 2 have annual passenger handling capacities of approximately 15 million and 40 million, respectively. The first phase of the redevelopment project involves only the northern section of Terminal 1-B, which handles approximately 5 million passengers annually. MIAL stated to the Ministry of Civil Aviation that confining the demolition scope to this area is intended to minimize impact on airline operations and passenger convenience.

Under the operational adjustment plan, at least one-third of international flight movements will be transferred to Navi Mumbai International Airport starting October 1, and at least one-third of Terminal 1 flights will be moved to Terminal 2 starting October 25. MIAL stated it will provide airlines with approximately three and a half months of transition assistance before demolition begins on January 15, 2027. Akasa Air had already relocated its domestic operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 on August 1.

MIAL has engaged with domestic and international airlines regarding the redistribution of certain flights between the two terminals and the relocation to Navi Mumbai Airport, and has proposed the formation of a Joint Transition Group chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation to coordinate stakeholders and reduce passenger inconvenience. Both Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport are assets of the Adani Group.
