Yusen Terminals Renews 30-Year Lease with Port of Los Angeles, Investing $200 Million
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 27, the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a 30-year terminal lease renewal with Yusen Terminals, extending the operating period through 2056. Under the lease agreement, Yusen Terminals will invest an additional $200 million over the coming years to procure zero-emission cargo handling equipment and drive upgrades to terminal equipment and supporting energy facilities.

Yusen Terminals has operated at the Port of Los Angeles since 1991, with its current operating area spanning approximately 232 acres, covering Berths 212 through 224 along the East Basin Channel of the port complex. The terminal provides vessel loading and unloading, yard operations, and specialized cargo handling services, equipped with on-dock rail, container storage facilities, and shore power systems for vessels. It currently operates 11 quay cranes, 6 of which are post-Panamax cranes.
The terminal has already deployed 8 electric reach stackers, 7 electric forklifts, and 2 electric yard tractors, along with 5 reach stacker charging stations, 2 yard tractor charging stations, and forklift charging facilities. Hydrogen fuel cell equipment includes 2 yard tractors, 1 reach stacker, and 1 rubber-tired gantry crane, with the respective equipment developed or supplied by Kalmar, Taylor, Paceco, and Toyota.
The terminal currently uses mobile hydrogen refueling vehicles for daily fuel supply, supplemented by on-site hydrogen refueling facilities. The additional $200 million investment will continue to fund zero-emission cargo handling equipment and supporting infrastructure, though specific procurement quantities and deployment timelines have not yet been determined. The Clean Air Action Plan updated by the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach in 2017 lists achieving zero emissions for cargo handling equipment in the San Pedro Bay port complex by 2030 as a primary goal.
Yusen Terminals is held by Ocean Network Express and provides terminal services for multiple international container shipping lines. With the long-term lease finalized, the company can continue advancing equipment replacement within its existing berths and cargo handling systems, reducing direct emissions from large port machinery, yard vehicles, and yard operations.
