Japan begins 23rd round of nuclear-contaminated water discharge into the sea

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) initiated the 5th round of nuclear-contaminated water discharge from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station for fiscal year 2026, marking the 23rd round overall.

According to local media reports in Fukushima, the discharge began at 11:29 a.m. local time on August 31 (10:29 a.m. Beijing time).

Based on materials released by TEPCO on August 27, this round of discharge is scheduled to continue until September 18, with an estimated total of approximately 7,800 tons of nuclear-contaminated water to be released, containing approximately 1.2 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium.

In August 2023, Japan, disregarding strong doubts and opposition from the international community, unilaterally and forcibly initiated the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. On August 24 this year, Japan marked the third anniversary of the discharge, with a cumulative discharge volume of approximately 173,000 tons. According to TEPCO data, as of August 13, storage tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station still held approximately 1.235 million tons of nuclear-contaminated water.
