Octopus Energy acquires BD Energy, bringing it into power trading business
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 1, Octopus Energy announced it had acquired BD Energy, a Danish automated power trading company, which will be integrated into Octopus Energy Trading. The transaction took effect immediately, with no details disclosed regarding the acquisition amount or equity terms. BD Energy's founding team, management, and employees will remain in place, and the company will continue to operate from Aarhus, Denmark, with Octopus providing capital and technical resources to expand its power trading scale and enter new international markets.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 2022, BD Energy specializes in automated power trading using algorithmic and machine learning systems. According to Octopus Energy, the company developed a trading platform capable of operating across 15 countries and 25 price zones in just four years.
This acquisition further consolidates Octopus Energy's strategic position in a power market increasingly affected by fluctuations in renewable energy generation. Output from wind and solar farms can swing significantly within short periods due to weather changes, driving sustained demand for systems that can respond quickly to shifts in supply, demand, and prices.
BD Energy's business focuses on the short-term power market, with trades executed in windows ranging from hours before power delivery to the moment electricity is about to enter the grid. The company's technology integrates weather forecasts, renewable generation data, and price and demand information to identify trading opportunities and execute transactions algorithmically, with approximately 99% of trades completed automatically.
Following the acquisition, BD Energy will be integrated into Octopus Energy Trading, the group's power trading division. The Danish company will continue to operate in Denmark, with its founding team and employees all remaining in place, while Octopus provides capital and technical capabilities to drive platform development and expansion into new markets.
For Octopus, this deal brings technical expertise in short-term power market management into its international expansion strategy, which spans renewable generation, power commercialization, and technology development. The British company believes that trading automation will play an increasingly important role as renewable generation continues to grow and power systems become more dependent on weather conditions.
The acquisition also extends Octopus's broader strategy of managing more flexible energy systems through technology. In recent years, the company has built a substantial portfolio across smart demand management, electric vehicles, energy storage, and renewable generation to drive more efficient coordination between production and consumption.
Frederik Vinkler, co-founder of BD Energy, emphasized that technology is the core element of the company's trading activities, and that joining forces with Octopus will enable its algorithms to be applied at a larger power trading scale and in new international markets.
Octopus Energy Trading stated that the addition of BD Energy will help strengthen its trading infrastructure and enhance the group's ability to optimize power flexibility across different markets. The transaction comes at a time of deep transformation in European energy markets, where the rapid proliferation of wind and solar power demands increasingly dynamic management approaches to balancing production, demand, and prices.
Alongside the BD Energy acquisition, Octopus continues to expand its renewable energy business across Europe and other international markets. The British energy company has become one of the key players in the digital energy sector, with operations spanning power commercialization, renewable generation, and technology development. Its technology platform Kraken is also one of the group's key assets, though Octopus recently pushed for the platform's spin-off into an independent company following a $1 billion investment led by D1 Capital Partners, which valued Kraken at approximately $8.65 billion.
By bringing in BD Energy, Octopus aims to extend this technical capability into the wholesale power trading business, leveraging automation to scale operations in an increasingly complex and volatile market.
