German Federal Ministry of Transport Launches Approximately €36 Million Funding Program for Digital Automatic Couplers
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) is advancing the digitalization of rail freight transport and has launched a new funding program for Digital Automatic Couplers (DAK). Through the new "PioDAK" initiative, the German federal government will invest approximately €36 million in pioneer train equipment, research and development projects, and related studies, with the German Federal Logistics and Mobility Agency (BALM) serving as the funding authority.

Digital Automatic Couplers are regarded as a key technology for the future of rail freight transport. Their core function is to automate the coupling process of freight wagons and enable digital data transmission throughout the entire train consist. This technology is expected to accelerate marshalling operations, enhance operational safety, reduce the heavy physical burden of manual handling, and improve overall operational efficiency.
With this round of funding, DAK will be tested for the first time under large-scale real-world operating conditions. The funding focus is on the equipping and retrofitting of pioneer trains, i.e., validating the new coupling technology at full-train scale in real line operations. In addition, the program supports subsequent DAK research and development efforts, as well as systematic studies on the economic, technical, and organizational issues associated with its introduction.
The overall funding framework covers three areas of action: equipping and testing pioneer trains with DAK technology; advancing research and development projects for system iteration; and conducting targeted studies on benefits, risks, costs, resource requirements, and potential implementation strategies. The operational experience gained during the projects will directly support a potential future Europe-wide rollout.
The German Federal Ministry of Transport assesses that DAK technology has now reached a level of development suitable for large-scale practical application. The goal of this funding program is to obtain reliable data from regular operating environments, thereby forming an evidence-based assessment of the technology's economic impact and technical maturity, and providing support for future decisions on Europe-wide deployment.
