Wedoany.com Report-Jun 23, India’s 2024-25 grain output reached an all-time high of 353.96 million tonnes, up 22 million tonnes from the previous year, fueled by favorable weather boosting rice, wheat, and corn yields, per the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). Wheat and rice production are expected to grow in 2025-26, aided by a strong monsoon forecast.
The 2025 monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, 2025, eight days early, the earliest in 16 years. The FAS said: “The 2025 monsoon rains arrived on the coast of India’s southernmost state, Kerala, on May 24, 2025, eight days earlier than normal, marking the earliest arrival in 16 years and offering hope for a bumper harvest in the upcoming season.”
Wheat output for 2025-26 is projected at 117.5 million tonnes, a 4% increase from 113.3 million tonnes. The FAS noted: “Timely planting, favorable weather conditions and an absence of any weather aberrations or pests/diseases during the reproductive stage through harvest (February-April) bolstered yield prospects.”
On May 27, 2025, India set wheat stock limits to curb price rises from hoarding, effective until March 31, 2026, with caps at 3,000 tonnes for traders/wholesalers, 10 tonnes per retail outlet, and 70% of monthly processing capacity for processors. Rice production is forecasted at 150 million tonnes for 2025-26, up from 149 million tonnes, with exports rising to 25 million tonnes from 24.5 million tonnes. Corn production is expected to dip slightly to 42 million tonnes from 42.6 million tonnes. The wheat export ban is likely to continue due to high domestic prices.
