Eni and Vitol Sign Memoranda of Understanding for Two Offshore Blocks in Ghana

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 10, Eni Ghana and Vitol Upstream Tano signed two memoranda of understanding with the Government of Ghana, covering the GH WB 3 and GH WB 8 offshore oil and gas blocks in the Tano Basin. Ghana's Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, signed on behalf of the government, with GNPC executives witnessing the ceremony. The two MOUs will serve as the basis for subsequently finalizing petroleum agreements, and the projects are currently still at the stage of advancing agreement negotiations.
The two blocks cover a combined area of approximately 2,100 square kilometers, with water depths of approximately 750–2,800 meters, both located in Ghana's western Tano Basin. Eni plans to advance the relevant blocks following a near-field exploration and infrastructure-led exploration model, leveraging nearby producing oil and gas fields and existing offshore infrastructure for subsequent exploration and appraisal.
This signing continues the cooperation intent formed in 2025. At that time, the relevant cooperation directions also included the potential development of the Eban-Akoma oil and gas discovery in the Cape Three Points Block 4, as well as increasing the production capacity of the OCTP project. The new milestone on September 10 marks the further progression of the GH WB 3 and GH WB 8 blocks from the intent stage to the stage of a jointly signed MoU by the government, Eni, and Vitol, with the next step being the completion of formal petroleum agreements.
Eni is currently the operator of Ghana's OCTP project, holding a 44.4% interest; Vitol holds 35.6%, and GNPC holds 20%. Eni's current equity production in Ghana is approximately 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The OCTP project is located in the same Tano Basin, and the existing partnership and infrastructure constitute the direct enabling conditions for the subsequent exploration plans of these two new blocks.
Ghana's current commercial oil and gas production is mainly concentrated in the western offshore area, including producing projects such as Jubilee, TEN, and Sankofa-Gye Nyame. Ghana's Ministry of Energy and Green Transition classifies the Tano–Cape Three Points area as one of the country's main offshore basins that have been fully explored and entered the production stage.
