AccelerComm Awarded ESA-Funded Contract to Advance Regenerative 5G Satellite Networks
en.Wedoany.com Reported - AccelerComm announced its participation in a new European Space Agency (ESA)-funded initiative to advance regenerative 5G satellite architecture for low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations. The company is a provider of high-performance physical layer solutions for 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN).
The initiative falls under the ESA ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) programme's Space for 5G/6G & Sustainable Connectivity programme, which aims to fund and develop innovative satellite technologies. AccelerComm will collaborate with Antwerp Space to deploy full 5G base station functionality directly on satellites, going beyond the traditional "bent-pipe" architecture that merely relays signals between users and ground infrastructure. The initiative will deliver a regenerative 5G NTN "gNodeB" demonstration system operating at Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL 5), supporting simultaneous multi-user access under realistic satellite channel conditions.
AccelerComm will contribute highly optimized physical layer (PHY) technology to the "Processor Technology for Direct Satellite-to-Device, 5G/6G Communications" activity, providing the Layer 1 processing capability required to achieve energy-efficient, standards-compliant 5G connectivity in the space environment.
David Helfgott, CEO of AccelerComm, said that regenerative NTN is one of the most significant architectural shifts in satellite communications today. Satellites are no longer merely transparent relays; the industry is moving toward networks that can process, manage, and optimize connectivity directly in orbit, which will bring advantages in efficiency, flexibility, latency, and scalability, but also poses significant technical challenges at the physical layer. ESA's support for this demonstration system reflects the growing momentum behind standards-based 5G NTN networks.
The demonstration will integrate dynamic user behavior, beam hopping, and intelligent power allocation strategies to optimize transmission performance in LEO satellite networks, and will align with some of the latest 3GPP NTN specifications to support interoperability between satellites and ground-based 5G infrastructure.
This ESA contract continues AccelerComm's momentum. In April 2026, the company announced the grant of its 56th international patent, further strengthening its intellectual property portfolio in 5G channel coding and physical layer acceleration technologies for terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. Its technology has been deployed on more than 300 commercial satellites and integrated into next-generation silicon platforms supporting advanced 5G connectivity.

ESA is helping accelerate the transition to regenerative 5G satellite networks that align with the future direction of global telecommunications standards; AccelerComm's expertise in highly efficient physical layer processing makes it a key partner in realizing this vision.
Both companies believe the initiative could open the door to future commercial deployments and other European programs involving regenerative NTN, including next-generation sovereign connectivity and defense-related programs.
