Denmark's "Greensand" Project Begins Commercial Operation, Storing Up to 400,000 Tonnes of CO2 Annually

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 18, Denmark's "Greensand Future" project officially commissioned its commercial offshore CO2 storage facility, beginning to build a complete commercial chain from CO2 capture, onshore transport, port temporary storage, and shipping to permanent subsea storage. The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency under the European Commission called it Europe's first commercial-scale, fully integrated offshore CO2 capture, transport, and permanent storage value chain.

The project is led by INEOS Energy, with participation from Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund Nordsøfonden. In the first phase, the CO2 mainly comes from Danish biomethane producers. After capture, the CO2 is liquefied and transported by truck to a dedicated CO2 terminal at the Port of Esbjerg for temporary storage, then shipped via the dedicated CO2 carrier Carbon Destroyer 1 to the offshore storage site in the North Sea.

The storage site is located at the depleted Nini West oil field approximately 250 kilometers off Denmark's west coast, where CO2 is injected through injection wells into a subsurface reservoir about 1,800 meters below the seabed for permanent storage. The designed annual storage capacity for the first phase of commercial operation is up to 400,000 tonnes; the EU disclosed that the project plans to store approximately 2.4 million tonnes of CO2 cumulatively over the next 8 years.

INEOS disclosed that as more CO2 capture projects are connected and market demand increases, Greensand plans to subsequently expand its annual storage capacity to 4 million–8 million tonnes. The project also received approximately 41 million euros in funding support from the EU Innovation Fund.

Greensand had previously conducted offshore CO2 injection verification, and the commissioning on September 18 corresponds to the commercial-scale operation milestone. The EU defines "full-scale operation" as an operating storage project with an annual injection volume exceeding 100,000 tonnes, and Greensand has now entered the commercial operation phase.
