UAE Carbon Dioxide Mineralization Storage Project Signs $11.7 Million Procurement Agreement
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 15, UK carbon mineralization technology company 44.01 announced that it had signed carbon removal procurement agreements worth a total of $11.7 million with corporate buyers in the carbon removal procurement coalition Frontier, and will permanently store 20,932 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the UAE through in-situ underground mineralization technology, with an agreed delivery period from 2028 to 2031. This transaction is Frontier's first purchase of in-situ mineralization carbon removal services. The project plans to shift from previous short-term injection trials to multi-year continuous operation, validating carbon dioxide injection and mineralization storage capacity at commercial scale.

The project will use biogenic carbon dioxide separated during biogas upgrading at a wastewater treatment plant in the UAE. The captured gas is transported to 44.01's mineralization storage site, mixed with water to form a carbonic acid-containing solution, and then injected through directional underground injection wells into naturally fractured peridotite formations. The carbon dioxide reacts with magnesium silicate minerals in the rock to form stable solid carbonates, achieving permanent underground storage.
44.01's in-situ mineralization system uses directional injection wells at a depth of about 1,000 meters, with the injected fluid entering the rock formation through natural fractures. The company records carbon dioxide injection volumes through wellhead mass flow meters and uses nearby monitoring wells to sample and analyze the mineralization reaction. Geophysical sensors will also monitor underground fluid migration and induced seismic activity. According to the technical plan published by Frontier, the injected carbon dioxide is expected to complete the mineralization reaction within 1 to 3 years.
This procurement was organized by Frontier, with participating buyers including Stripe, Google, Shopify, Autodesk, H&M Group, and Workday, while additional companies participated through Watershed. The contract price covers carbon dioxide capture, underground mineralization, and monitoring, reporting, and verification services. 44.01 previously received early advance purchase support from Stripe and Shopify in 2022. This signing expands the scope of cooperation between the two parties and forms a long-term procurement arrangement with agreed delivery volumes and timelines.
Since 2023, 44.01 has carried out multiple rounds of underground mineralization trials in Oman and the UAE, completing a total of 5 field pilots, mainly using short-cycle carbon dioxide injection methods. In 2024, the company, together with partners including Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, completed a 100-day mineralization trial in Fujairah, UAE, storing about 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide in total. In July 2026, a carbon capture and mineralization demonstration project in the cement industry, jointly carried out by 44.01 and Holcim UAE, began operation, designed to capture 4 to 4.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day from cement plant flue gas.
Under this long-term procurement arrangement, 44.01 will collect data on injection rates, water consumption, and operating costs during multi-year continuous operation, and will carry out measurement and verification of underground mineralization performance.
