Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station Set for Expansion

Wedoany.com Report-Jun 26, The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, in collaboration with Emaar Properties, has announced plans to expand the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station. The project will increase the station’s area from 6,700m² to 8,500m², boosting its hourly capacity by 65%, from 7,250 to 12,320 passengers. The expanded station is expected to accommodate up to 220,000 passengers daily.

The station’s design will follow the architectural concept of the elevated stations on the Red and Green Lines.

Since its opening in early 2010, the station has experienced growing demand, with passenger numbers rising from 6.13 million in 2013 to over 10.57 million in 2024, averaging 58,000 daily boardings and alightings. The expansion aims to enhance the passenger experience, particularly during peak periods such as New Year’s Eve, Eids, and other public holidays.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at Dubai RTA, stated: “The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station is a key hub in the Dubai Metro network, thanks to its strategic location near Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Downtown. It serves as a convenient and efficient gateway for residents and visitors, particularly during large-scale events and holidays, particularly New Year’s Eve, Eids, national events and public holidays. This expansion project responds to sustained and rising demand for metro services, with projections extending to 2040. Passenger numbers during New Year’s Eve exceed 110,000, and the station has recorded an average annual ridership growth of 7.5% over the past five years.”

The project includes upgrades to the station’s facilities and an increase in physical space. The design will maintain the architectural style of the Dubai Metro’s Red and Green Lines, inspired by a seashell, while prioritizing safety, security, and reduced walking distances for better accessibility. Ground-level entrances will integrate with public transport and alternative mobility options, such as bicycles and e-scooters, ensuring seamless pedestrian access and alignment with the urban environment. The station will also be designed to accommodate people with disabilities, older residents, and parents with pushchairs.

In early June 2025, Dubai’s RTA laid the foundation stone for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a 30km project featuring 14 new stations, further expanding the city’s public transportation network. The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station expansion reflects Dubai’s commitment to improving infrastructure to meet growing urban demands while enhancing accessibility and sustainability.
