New Progress on Edinburgh Airport's £65 Million Terminal Expansion

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 22, UK infrastructure contractor Balfour Beatty announced the latest progress on the South East Pier Expansion (SEPEX) project at Edinburgh Airport. The contract is valued at approximately £65 million, with Balfour Beatty responsible for constructing a two-storey terminal extension, adding 8 new boarding gates, and expanding waiting, commercial, and airport operational spaces. The contract was awarded in May 2026, and the project is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.

Recent construction has completed the installation of 8 connecting bridges, with all work carried out while the airport remained fully operational. Balfour Beatty stated that this milestone marks phased progress on the main connecting structure, and work will continue on the terminal interior and supporting works. At peak, the project will employ more than 300 workers on site, including over 30 apprentices and graduates.

SEPEX is the first major project in Edinburgh Airport's capital investment programme of more than £500 million over the next five years. The overall airport transformation will increase terminal floor area by approximately 60%. In addition to the South East Pier, it includes new aircraft stands, an expanded check-in hall and waiting areas, an additional 4,000 square metres of departures hall space, a 2,400 square metre expansion of the baggage handling hall, and new international arrivals facilities.

Airside works will also advance in parallel. The Foxtrot Airfield Works programme plans to create 7 full Code C stands equipped with boarding bridges, providing apron capacity for the terminal expansion, retail, border control, and baggage system upgrades. The airport will also build a new entrance area, assisted travel reception space, and supporting roads and electric vehicle infrastructure.

Balfour Beatty has long been involved in Edinburgh Airport's infrastructure development. Since 2010, the company has completed over £80 million of works at the airport, covering terminal and airfield modifications, runway and taxiway repairs, security system upgrades, baggage hall expansion, and fire station refurbishment. SEPEX continues to be delivered by Balfour Beatty as the main contractor.
