en.Wedoany.com Reported - Sunrun and Tesla announced that the two companies organized more than 140,000 residential batteries in California to participate in grid dispatch, delivering over 580MW of peak power to the state grid on the evening of September 9, with discharge lasting 3 hours. The dispatch occurred during extreme heat, rising electricity demand, and high wholesale power prices, and was requested by the California Energy Commission and utility companies.

Of the 580MW output, approximately 517MW came from Tesla Powerwalls, with about 110,000 Powerwalls participating in the dispatch, more than half of which are owned and operated by Sunrun; Sunrun also dispatched over 30,000 residential batteries from other brands. The participating devices are distributed across the service territories of California's three major investor-owned utilities, covering residential energy storage resources throughout the state.

The dispatch was implemented through the California Energy Commission's Demand Side Grid Support (DSGS) program and the California Public Utilities Commission's Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP). The DSGS dispatch trigger condition is when the California Independent System Operator's day-ahead locational marginal price exceeds $200/MWh; PG&E activated ELRP during the heat wave, requiring residential energy storage in its service area to discharge to the grid.

On the evening of September 10, Southern California Edison again requested a 3-hour peak dispatch, and Sunrun and Tesla delivered over 140MW of battery capacity to the grid that day. The two companies stated that if the two dispatches on September 9 and 10 had occurred during the same period, their residential energy storage resources could have provided over 720MW of power in a single dispatch.

Sunrun previously disclosed in July that its California distributed power plant dispatchable capacity had expanded to 425MW. This actual output of 580MW further expands the scale of residential-side battery aggregation dispatch and validates the operational capability of home energy storage to support state-level grid peaks through virtual power plants.
