China's First Large-Scale Application of 18 MW Offshore Wind Turbines Project Put into Operation
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 24, China's first project featuring large-scale application of 18 MW offshore wind turbines achieved full-capacity operation, which will accelerate China's offshore wind power development toward large capacity and low cost.

The CGN Guangdong Yangjiang Fanshi 2-million-kilowatt offshore wind power project, which was put into operation this time, consists of two million-kilowatt-level sub-projects, among which 33 units of 18 MW ultra-large offshore wind turbines are installed, making it the offshore wind turbine model with the largest single-unit capacity deployed at scale in China at present. Its rotor diameter reaches 292 meters, with a swept area of approximately 66,000 square meters, equivalent to the size of 9 standard football fields. After large-scale application, it can effectively reduce the number of turbine positions, lower the costs of submarine cable laying, offshore foundation construction, and sea area occupation.

Chen Youdeng, Project Manager of CGN Guangdong Yangjiang Offshore Wind Power: The Fanshi project has installed 131 offshore wind turbine units, with an average annual delivery of approximately 6.6 billion kWh of clean energy, and the annual power generation of a single turbine unit can reach 56 million kWh. Under full-load operation, each rotation of the rotor can generate 43 kWh of electricity, which can meet the daily electricity consumption of an ordinary household for 9 consecutive days.

In response to the characteristics of offshore wind power such as long offshore distance and long transmission distance, the project has also built China's first 500 kV intermediate reactive power compensation station for an offshore wind farm, creating a new model for stable long-distance grid connection of large-capacity wind power and solving the challenge of stable grid connection of million-kilowatt-level offshore wind power.
After full-capacity operation of the project, it is equivalent to saving approximately 1.92 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 5.1 million tons annually. With the project put into operation, the installed capacity of offshore wind power in Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, has exceeded 8 million kilowatts, making it the prefecture-level city with the largest installed capacity of offshore wind power in China.
