Vestas Launches New 7.2 MW Onshore Turbine V182 Rotor Diameter Increased to 182 Meters

This model is developed on the EnVentus platform, with a rated power of 7.2 MW, a rotor diameter of 182 meters, a swept area of 26,016 square meters, and is designed for low to medium wind speed sites. Compared with the V172-7.2 MW, which also has a 7.2 MW rating, the V182 uses a larger rotor and is expected to increase annual energy production by 4% to 6% under different site conditions.

The V182-7.2 MW has a specific power of approximately 277 W/m², further reducing specific power compared with the V172-7.2 MW. Vestas disclosed that under corresponding site conditions, the new model can increase the capacity factor by up to approximately 2% and shift more power generation to lower wind speed operating ranges. The company also provided an expectation of up to approximately 3% improvement in power price capture level, but this indicator depends on local wind resources, electricity market prices, and project operating conditions.

The turbine adopts variable speed and pitch control, with a rated power of 7,200 kW, a cut-in wind speed of 3 m/s, a cut-out wind speed of 25 m/s, an applicable wind class of IEC S, and a standard operating temperature range of -20°C to 45°C. The drivetrain uses a three-stage planetary gearbox and a full-power converter. Standard hub heights include 109 meters and 170 meters, and site-specific towers can also be configured according to specific projects.

The V182-7.2 MW continues to use the core system architecture of the EnVentus platform. Vestas currently has more than 15 GW of EnVentus platform turbines in operation globally, corresponding to more than 2,000 wind turbines. The platform has previously covered models such as the V162 and V172. The new model mainly improves power generation capacity at the same rated power by enlarging the rotor diameter and making adjustments to the drivetrain.

Vestas positions the V182-7.2 MW for the global onshore market, with key applicability for low to medium wind speed sites in Europe, Australia, South Africa, and North and South America. The official product launch has been completed and technical specifications have been made public, but the first orders, specific project sites, installation time of the first prototype, type certification milestones, and mass delivery plans have not yet been announced.
