Liuwudian Suspension Bridge of the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge in China Closes, Offshore Main Line Scheduled to Open to Traffic by Year-End

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 24, the Liuwudian Suspension Bridge, a key controlling project of the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge (Xiamen section), was successfully closed. The project will subsequently advance the construction of the bridge deck system, electromechanical works, and traffic safety facilities. The offshore main line of the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge (Xiamen section) is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of December 2026, with the entire line expected to be fully connected by the end of 2027.

The Liuwudian Suspension Bridge, also known as the Liuwudian Channel Bridge, has a total length of 1,948 meters, a main span of 928 meters, and a cable tower height of 178 meters. It is a key controlling project of the Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge (Xiamen section). The main bridge spans the Liuwudian Channel, which is navigable by 200,000-tonne vessels, and adopts a five-span continuous composite bridge tower planar cable suspension bridge structure. According to the Fujian Provincial Department of Transportation, the bridge is the longest-span bridge in Fujian Province and the first offshore sea suspension bridge in Fujian Province.

Construction of the Liuwudian Channel Bridge has previously completed successive milestones including the anchorage steel caisson, main tower foundation, pile cap, and suspension system. In July 2024, the project's first steel caisson completed sinking and seating; in January 2025, the east main tower steel cofferdam completed positioning and installation; in April 2026, the bridge catwalk erection was completed, and construction shifted to the suspension system phase. Following this closure, the construction focus has shifted to the bridge deck system as well as subsequent works such as electromechanical and traffic safety facilities.

The Xiamen-Kinmen Bridge (Xiamen section) has a total length of approximately 19.6 kilometers and is an important component of the expressway connecting line in the national highway network plan. Upon completion, the project will connect Xiamen Island with Xiang'an International Airport, forming a sea-land-air transportation system together with the Xiamen-Kinmen route. According to the construction plan previously announced by Fujian Province, the offshore main line bridge is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of December 2026, and the entire project is scheduled to be fully connected by the end of 2027.
