£67.4 Million Gallows Corner Flyover Refurbishment in the UK Completed

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 21, the Gallows Corner flyover and roundabout in northeast London, UK, fully reopened to traffic after the completion of strengthening and refurbishment works with a total investment of approximately £67.4 million, and the remaining traffic restrictions and diversion measures were lifted at the same time. This junction connects the A12 Eastern Avenue, the A127 Southend Arterial Road and the A118 Main Road, and is an important road hub in the Havering area. The project was organized and implemented by Transport for London, with Costain responsible for the flyover strengthening, refurbishment, pavement restoration and other on-site modification works.

The Gallows Corner flyover was built in the 1970s and was originally constructed as a temporary structure. In addition to the existing foundations, this upgrade renewed and replaced the remaining major structures of the flyover. The works included structural strengthening, concrete repairs, steel structure reinforcement, replacement of key bridge deck components, renewal of the waterproofing system and resurfacing of the bridge deck. After completion of the works, the conditions were met for lifting the existing vehicle speed and weight restrictions.

Construction on the project began in March 2025. During construction, the flyover and roundabout were closed in phases, with the flyover partially reopening to eastbound traffic in May 2026, while the westbound direction and some roundabout link roads remained closed for construction. From September onward, Costain completed pavement restoration on the A127 and A12, road markings and commissioning of the new pedestrian crossing facilities. From the evening of September 18 to the early hours of September 21, the entire Gallows Corner junction underwent a final full weekend closure to complete the final surfacing and restoration works.

During the project construction period, Essex & Suffolk Water simultaneously carried out works on the underground water supply facilities at the junction, diverting and replacing a strategic water main and several distribution pipelines. After the water supply facility works were completed and the site was handed over, Costain entered the final restoration phase for the roads and flyover in September. The underground pipeline works and the flyover upgrade shared the same construction window, reducing the need for future excavation of the road again.

The upgrade project also included the construction of new pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities around the Gallows Corner roundabout, as well as completion of road resurfacing, road markings and restoration of related street furniture. After the flyover fully opened, eastbound and westbound traffic between the A12 and A127 resumed, and all connecting directions of the roundabout reopened to general traffic.

Gallows Corner had previously been subject to vehicle weight and speed restrictions due to the condition of the existing structure, which constrained the passage of large vehicles. Transport for London stated that after completion of this structural renewal, the flyover can restore its full load-carrying function and continue to serve road traffic between northeast London and the Essex direction.
