First 33MW Enhanced Geothermal Module at Fervo Cape Station in the U.S. Connected to Grid and Generating Power
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Fervo Energy announced that its Cape Station enhanced geothermal project in Beaver County, Utah, has achieved first grid-connected power generation. This delivery came from the first 33MW GeoBlock module of Phase I of the project, marking Cape Station's transition from the construction and commissioning stage to actual power generation. Fervo stated that this is the world's first utility-scale new-build enhanced geothermal system (EGS) project to achieve grid-connected power delivery.

Phase I of Cape Station has a total capacity of approximately 100MW, consisting of three 33MW GeoBlocks. The first module has already achieved First Power and is scheduled to reach its contracted commercial operation date before October 1, 2026; the other two GeoBlocks are currently being commissioned, with a target of reaching commercial operation conditions before January 1, 2027. Once all of Phase I is in operation, it will provide approximately 100MW of continuous geothermal power generation capacity.
Fervo employs enhanced geothermal system technology, introducing mature drilling and completion methods from the oil and gas industry into geothermal development through horizontal drilling, multi-well pads, and engineered reservoir stimulation. The company has completed drilling, fracturing, and completion of the first well pad group at Cape Station Phase I, and has introduced high-temperature subsurface fluids into the heat exchange and power generation system. The first GeoBlock had previously completed mechanical completion and equipment installation, and as the well pad group is gradually connected, power generation output will continue to increase.
Phase II of Cape Station is also under construction with an additional 400MW of capacity, planned to use eight 50MW GeoBlocks, with a target of entering commercial operation in 2028. The project has currently secured approximately 900MW of contracted power sales. On September 1, Fervo also signed a 396MW power purchase agreement with Google, and granted Google an option to subsequently expand procurement by approximately 600MW.
Cape Station is Fervo's core project advancing from single-well technology validation to large-scale commercial geothermal development. The company's earlier Project Red has been supplying power to the grid since 2023, while Cape Station adopts a multi-module, large-scale development model. With the first 33MW GeoBlock connected to the grid, the project's subsequent focus will shift to commissioning the remaining modules of Phase I and constructing the 400MW Phase II.
