Florida State University Awarded $2.1 Million to Build Quantum Communication Testbed
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Florida State University (FSU) has received $2.1 million in federal community project funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to build a campus-scale quantum communication testbed. The testbed physically connects two nodes: a central hub located in the Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building at FSU, and a receiving node at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

Under the plan, researchers will test quantum communication performance under conditions that simulate real-world challenges, including strong atmospheric turbulence, strong magnetic fields, and cryogenic thermal cycling. U.S. Representative Daniel Webster said the investment will help establish the first quantum communication testbed facility in the southeastern United States.
The project is a multi-institutional collaboration that leverages existing campus fiber optic resources to transmit and monitor entangled photons, enabling researchers to evaluate link reliability and optimize system performance under controlled but challenging conditions. The system's reconfigurable optical links will intentionally subject components to environmental stress to simulate real-world operational obstacles beyond typical laboratory environments. Researchers will specifically examine quantum communication performance while subjecting the system to conditions that pose significant obstacles to deploying quantum networks outside controlled laboratory environments.
This $2.1 million investment, championed by U.S. Representative Daniel Webster, aims to position FSU as a leading hub for quantum technology in the southeastern United States and to strengthen American innovation in an area increasingly regarded as critical to national security. Webster said, "These resources will help expand their important work and strengthen American innovation."
Suvranu De, dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, noted that the focus has shifted from proof-of-concept demonstrations to practical reliability. He said the next frontier is not just demonstrating quantum communication in an ideal laboratory, but understanding how to keep these systems reliable in the environments where they will ultimately operate.
He also said the investment provides a platform that connects fundamental quantum science with engineering validation, workforce development, and future collaboration with government, industry, and other universities, representing an important step toward secure and resilient quantum networks capable of operating in the real world. The testbed's design also prioritizes educational opportunities, providing students and researchers with hands-on experience across the entire quantum network stack, from photon generation and detection to data processing and network control.
Wei Guo, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and co-director of the FSU Quantum Initiative, emphasized the value of this hands-on training and described the project as "a significant research infrastructure investment that can support future quantum networking activities and position FSU for larger-scale opportunities." The new infrastructure complements FSU's existing quantum research portfolio, including four major projects led under the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, which focus on developing AI-driven diagnostic tools for quantum computers and deepening understanding of atomic nuclei and other quantum systems.
The university's investment in quantum technology is not limited to research: it has launched Florida's first graduate certificate program in quantum information science and engineering and established the Florida Alliance for Quantum Technology. Guo said, "Florida State University leads the nation in quantum science and engineering," emphasizing the university's desire to stay at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field.
