New Container Rail Terminal in Augsburg, Germany Features 4 Tracks of 700 Meters to Enhance Intermodal Transport

Upon completion, the project will replace the existing Augsburg Oberhausen container terminal. DB InfraGO, the German railway infrastructure company, is responsible for construction, while DUSS, the German rail-road intermodal transport company, will be responsible for subsequent operations. The new hub will handle the transfer of containers, semi-trailers, and swap bodies between rail and road.

The project is equipped with 4 loading and unloading tracks, each with an effective lifting length of approximately 700 meters, as well as 2 storage tracks, 1 bypass track, and 1 lead track. The loading and unloading area is equipped with 2 gantry cranes, with provisions reserved for adding a third gantry crane. On the road side, lanes for vehicle travel, loading and unloading, and return are provided. The site will also be equipped with 4 container storage tracks and a video gate system for digital identification of rail and road freight units.

According to the current plan, the new terminal is expected to handle approximately 62,000 loading units per year in 2030, with subsequent expansion to 105,000. After the project is completed, the existing Oberhausen terminal will cease operations; the old terminal currently has an annual handling capacity of approximately 25,000 loading units and has already reached its capacity limit.

The total investment of the project is approximately 83 million euros, of which the European Union provides approximately 37.6 million euros in funding support through the Connecting Europe Facility mechanism, with the remaining funds borne by the German federal government and the German railway system. The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in July 2024. Public information in May 2026 shows that construction is still progressing, and the construction site has entered the main works implementation stage.

The south side of the new terminal will connect to the Augsburg marshalling yard, with a supporting new railway bridge and connecting line; the north side will have a lead track running parallel to the direction of the A8 highway. Project estimates show that after commissioning, it can reduce approximately 2.3 million truck kilometers of transport per year, corresponding to a reduction of approximately 700,000 liters of diesel consumption.
