Vodafone UK Partners with New York University to Research Communications Network Resilience
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 3, Vodafone Business, the enterprise business unit of UK telecom operator Vodafone, established a research partnership with NYU WIRELESS, the wireless research center at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering, with Vodafone joining the center as an industry affiliate member. The two parties will conduct joint research on wireless spectrum, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and communications network resilience, and will co-author technical white papers for the UK government, regulators, and the communications industry. The partnership was announced during the AI-Native 6G Summit held in Brooklyn, New York.

The joint research will cover mobile network operations under conditions such as extreme weather, communications cable disruptions, wireless signal interference, and cyberattacks. Vodafone will contribute real-world mobile network operating experience, while the NYU research team will provide technical research capabilities in wireless communications, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, jointly assessing the reliability of existing and next-generation mobile networks.
Vodafone and NYU plan to co-author a series of research white papers focusing on radio spectrum, UK digital sovereignty, and future resilient communications networks. The research findings will be directed at government, communications regulators, and industry participants, while the two parties will also carry out joint research projects on related technical topics.
NYU's London Academic Center will serve as the primary UK base for the partnership, hosting researcher exchanges, technical seminars, and collaborative events. The center will also invite representatives from the UK government, the communications industry, and academic institutions to participate in related activities, supporting transatlantic joint research between the two parties.
The NYU WIRELESS industry affiliate network that Vodafone is joining already includes companies such as Apple, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, and MediaTek. The collaborative research will combine telecom operators' live network operating conditions to assess the real-world performance of wireless communications technologies under severe weather, deliberate interference, and other network anomalies.
VodafoneThree is advancing an £11 billion UK mobile network investment program. This research partnership with New York University will serve as a supporting research activity for that network build program, with research directions covering the operational assurance of existing wireless networks as well as the security and reliability of future communications systems.
