Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 8, A new joint venture, Zukunftswärme M West (ZMW), has been established by Stadtwerke München (SWM) and the neighboring cities of Puchheim and Germering to develop a geothermal project in western Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The initiative aims to explore, plan, build, and operate a geothermal facility to provide sustainable energy for the region.

The project began in February 2025, when the city councils of Germering and Puchheim approved the collaboration. Following this, all necessary formalities for ZMW’s formation were completed, culminating in its registration in the commercial register. SWM holds a 60% stake in the company, with Germering owning 25% and Puchheim 15%.

Previous attempts by Germering and Puchheim to develop geothermal projects faced challenges related to funding and community support. The formation of ZMW leverages SWM’s 20 years of expertise in managing six geothermal plants in the Munich area, enabling cost-sharing and enhanced project viability. This partnership aims to overcome past obstacles and deliver a reliable renewable energy solution.

Norbert Seidl, Mayor of Puchheim, stated: “As project partners, we all have the same interest: securing renewable heat for our cities. Munich municipal utility company will contribute its extensive geothermal experience from the past 20 years. With its projects in the Munich area, it has proven that geothermal energy is an essential building block for a secure and stable heat supply. Thanks to this partnership, we look forward to the project with confidence.”

The collaboration is now focused on securing funding, conducting a feasibility study, and selecting an optimal drilling site. An informational event for residents is scheduled for fall 2025 to foster community engagement. Based on the current timeline, the geothermal plant is expected to commence operations no earlier than 2033.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to sustainable energy development, combining local expertise and resources to support the region’s transition to renewable heat sources. The project is poised to contribute significantly to the energy needs of western Munich while promoting environmental sustainability.
