en.Wedoany.com Reported - The first phase of the expansion plan for the Royal Alexandra Hospital is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
The 27,900-square-foot expansion recently received site use approval from the planning committee of Denbighshire County Council and is set to begin construction within weeks. The application was submitted by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.
Councillor Barry Mellor stated at the planning committee meeting that the hospital's service area extends beyond Rhyl and Prestatyn to cover the entire Denbighshire region. He revealed that construction is expected to start in July and expressed anticipation for the project's progress.
The three-story expansion building will be constructed by MTX Contractors, a specialist in medical properties, using modern construction methods. Upon completion, the expansion will house a minor injuries and illnesses unit, a radiology department, a dental unit with four consultation rooms, a staff center, and a 14-bed rehabilitation ward.
The design was drafted by CRI8 Studio, with the project team also including Tetra Tech, Curtins, MDA Wirral, Bowland Tree Consultancy, Survey Operations, and DSSR. The project secured £33 million in funding from the Welsh Government earlier this year and is located on a one-acre site at the southern end of the hospital campus, adjacent to Russell Road. The site currently serves as a parking lot and houses a mortuary building, which will be demolished.
This expansion is the first phase of a proposed £60 million investment in the hospital. A business case for the second phase will be submitted to the Welsh Government in due course.
Plans to redevelop the Royal Alexandra Hospital have been under consideration since 2013. That year, Health Minister Mark Drakeford allocated £750,000 to develop a strategic outline plan for the building. In 2020, a plan to construct a four-story expansion was approved but later abandoned due to cost issues.
