Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 21, In the first week of September, Petrobras carried out tests at its Henrique Lage Refinery (Revap) in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The process involved the co-processing of vegetable oil with traditional petroleum streams, marking an important step in Brazil’s strategy to expand renewable fuel production.

SAF is considered a practical alternative to conventional aviation kerosene because it can be used directly in aircraft without requiring modifications to engines or fueling infrastructure. This compatibility makes it an immediate solution for reducing emissions in the aviation sector.

During the test at Revap, vegetable oil was added to the production of aviation kerosene (QAV), reaching a renewable content of up to 1.2%. According to Revap’s general manager, Alexandre Coelho Cavalcanti: “This is a lower investment approach for the production of fuels with renewable content, as it uses existing assets.” His statement highlights the benefit of adapting current facilities to incorporate renewable feedstocks without extensive new construction.

The development of this technological route is particularly relevant in the context of future market requirements. Starting in 2027, Brazilian airlines will be required to include SAF in their fuel mix, under the Future Fuel Law and the mandatory phase of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s CORSIA program, which aims to reduce and offset CO₂ emissions from international aviation.

Petrobras emphasized the strategic importance of the tests. William França, Director of Industrial Processes and Products at Petrobras, stated: “The initiative demonstrates Petrobras’ commitment to innovation and sustainability, preparing to meet the future demands of a more sustainable aviation sector.” His remarks position the company’s efforts as both a technological milestone and a contribution to global climate objectives.

In addition to Revap’s tests, Petrobras recently secured approval for renewable content integration at another facility. The Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc) in Rio de Janeiro received authorization from Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) to incorporate up to 1.2% of renewable raw material into SAF production. The refinery is expected to begin production for commercialization in the coming months, further strengthening Petrobras’ role in the supply of renewable fuels.

These initiatives reflect Petrobras’ broader focus on innovation and adaptation to energy transition trends. By leveraging co-processing methods, the company aims to balance renewable integration with cost efficiency, supporting both national requirements and international aviation sustainability goals. The progress at Revap and Reduc demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be effectively utilized to deliver renewable fuel solutions while maintaining operational stability and market readiness.

Through these advancements, Petrobras is positioning itself as a key contributor to the development of sustainable aviation fuels in Brazil, aligning with future regulations and expanding its role in reducing emissions within the global aviation industry.
