Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 21, China’s Huayuan Star Shipping has placed an order for two kamsarmax bulk carriers at domestic shipyard Jiangsu Haitong Offshore Engineering Equipment, aiming to expand its fleet. A signing ceremony took place recently in Shanghai to formalize the deal.

The vessels, each with a deadweight of 85,000 dwt, are scheduled for delivery in the second and fourth quarters of 2028, with the yard committing to deliver both ships by the end of December 2028. The kamsarmax ships will feature methanol-ready engines, allowing flexibility for future fuel conversion as green methanol becomes more widely available.

Designed for both domestic and international operations, the vessels will mainly transport coal to power plants along China’s southern coast through Huayuan Star’s existing logistics network. Once delivered, the new ships will increase Huayuan Star’s owned fleet capacity to approximately 504,000 dwt.

The order represents a further step in Jiangsu Haitong’s expansion into the dry bulk segment. Traditionally focused on offshore and heavy industrial projects, the yard has been broadening its bulk carrier portfolio to meet growing demand from Chinese shipowners seeking future-proof tonnage.

This investment reflects Huayuan Star’s strategy to modernize and diversify its fleet while preparing for emerging fuel options in the maritime sector. By incorporating methanol-ready technology, the company positions itself to adapt to evolving energy and environmental standards.

The kamsarmax pair will strengthen Huayuan Star’s operational capabilities for both domestic coal transport and international bulk cargo services, enhancing efficiency across its logistics network. The vessels’ delivery schedule aligns with the company’s medium-term expansion plans, contributing to China’s broader shipping capacity growth.

Jiangsu Haitong’s role in this deal highlights the yard’s increasing participation in the dry bulk market, complementing its traditional expertise in offshore and heavy industrial shipbuilding.
