Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 23, Technip Energies (Paris) announced that Malaysia’s first melamine plant, developed for Petronas Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), has received its ‘Ready For Start Up’ (RFSU) certificate. Located in Kedah, the facility has an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tons and incorporates advanced Low Energy Melamine (LEM™) technology from Casale S.A. (Lugano, Switzerland), integrated with PCG’s existing urea plant.

The new plant is expected to strengthen Malaysia’s import substitution, support value-added downstream manufacturing, and contribute to the country’s chemical diversification. Melamine, a versatile chemical, is used in producing plastics, building materials, industrial coatings, and other products, providing a foundation for further industrial applications.

This milestone follows the project receiving prestigious safety awards from the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health and the Construction Industry Development Board in late 2024, highlighting the project’s commitment to high safety and operational standards.

A consortium led by Technip Energies was awarded an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning (EPCC) contract by PCG in 2022, following the completion of an initial Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) project. The plant achieved mechanical completion in January 2025, paving the way for successful commissioning and start-up operations.

Technip Energies’ role encompassed engineering design, procurement, construction management, and commissioning support, ensuring that the plant meets global technical, safety, and operational standards. The facility’s integration with the urea plant enhances energy efficiency and maximizes production synergies.

With the RFSU certificate secured, the plant is now ready to commence operations, delivering high-quality melamine to support Malaysia’s growing chemical and manufacturing sectors. The facility demonstrates the combination of advanced technology, local industrial development, and international engineering expertise.

By enabling local production of melamine, the plant reduces reliance on imports while creating opportunities for value-added downstream products in plastics, laminates, coatings, and other chemical applications. This initiative supports Malaysia’s broader industrial strategy and strengthens its position in regional and global chemical markets.

Overall, the Kedah melamine plant marks a significant step in Malaysia’s chemical sector development, combining modern technology, operational safety, and sustainable industrial growth. It reinforces Technip Energies’ track record in delivering large-scale, technically complex projects and contributes to the continued advancement of Malaysia’s chemical manufacturing capabilities.
