Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 23, Greek owner Alberta Shipmanagement has made its first entry into the containership sector, joining other traditional tanker and bulker operators diversifying their fleets. The Athens-based company has reportedly ordered two 1,930 TEU vessels at CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, with deliveries expected in 2028. The contract also includes options for additional units.
Alberta Shipmanagement, backed by the Inglessis family, currently operates a mixed fleet of tankers and bulkers and has historically focused its newbuilding activity in Japan. This order represents both the company’s first Chinese newbuilding contract and its initial venture into container shipping.
Founded in 2019 by the fifth generation of the Inglessis family, whose shipping heritage dates back to 1875, Alberta presently controls around 25 ships, including two VLCCs under construction in Japan. The move into container shipping aligns with a broader trend among Greek owners investing in small-to-mid-size boxships.
In 2025, several Greek operators—including Danaos, Capital Group, Minerva Dry, Chartworld, Latsco Shipping, and Euroseas—have secured tonnage in the 1,700–3,000 TEU range, reflecting interest in feeder and regional container services. This segment is seen as offering steady charter demand and resilient earnings, even as larger vessel segments face challenges.
The “Bangkokmax” designs ordered by Alberta are suited for intra-Asia and regional Mediterranean trades, providing flexibility for regional operations. As of now, employment arrangements for the ships have not been disclosed, according to Alphaliner.
This expansion represents a strategic diversification for Alberta, leveraging its experience in tanker and bulker operations while entering the container market, which remains in demand for regional and feeder trades. The new vessels will complement the company’s existing fleet and support long-term growth in emerging container shipping segments.
By entering the container sector with modern, mid-size vessels, Alberta aims to participate in regional trade flows and capitalize on the resilient charter market for feeder and intra-Asia services. This step marks a significant milestone in the company’s evolution from a traditional tanker and bulker operator to a multi-segment shipping group, enhancing its flexibility and market reach.
Overall, Alberta Shipmanagement’s first container ship order highlights the ongoing diversification trend among Greek shipping companies and signals continued investment in small-to-mid-size tonnage to meet growing demand for regional container transport.
