Porsche Appoints Christian Friedl to Head Global Production and Logistics, Will Advance Co-Production of All-Electric 718 and 911 on the Same Line

Christian Friedl, 49, officially assumed the role of Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche on September 1, succeeding Albrecht Reimold, who retired as planned. Reimold had headed the division for more than ten years and retired at the end of his term on August 31.

Friedl was promoted from within Porsche. Prior to his new role, he was responsible for corporate quality management. He previously held various management positions in Porsche's production system and the Volkswagen Group, and also oversaw Porsche's main plant in Zuffenhausen. In his new position, he will be responsible for Porsche's international production and logistics network, including the Zuffenhausen and Leipzig production sites in Germany, as well as the CKD assembly operations in Malaysia.

In the next phase at the Zuffenhausen plant, the new-generation all-electric 718 model will be integrated into the existing 911 assembly line, enabling co-production of electric two-door sports cars and 911 models equipped with flat-six engines. Porsche has already invested approximately 250 million euros in this production adjustment, carrying out modifications and expansions at the Zuffenhausen plant, including extending the assembly line, deploying automated guided vehicles, and constructing new vehicle testing and finishing areas.

Zuffenhausen currently handles production of models such as the 911 and Taycan. In 2025, Porsche produced 55,371 units of the 911 and 11,510 units of the Taycan at this site; during the same period, 15,856 units of the 718 Boxster/Cayman were produced at the Osnabrück plant. Production of the combustion-engine 718 ended at the end of October 2025. In the first half of 2026, Porsche also cited the discontinuation of the combustion-engine 718 as one of the reasons for the decline in deliveries during that period.

Porsche's existing flexible production system in Zuffenhausen can assemble different models and derivative versions of the 911 series on a single production line. To integrate the electric two-door sports car, the company has expanded this system; the Taycan continues to be manufactured on a separate production line configured for the all-electric architecture. The Leipzig site is currently capable of producing vehicles with three powertrain types—all-electric, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion engine—simultaneously on existing production lines.

In July of this year, Porsche's Executive Board and the General Works Council also reached an agreement on the "Future Package," under which the company plans to invest a cumulative 2.1 billion euros in the Zuffenhausen and Weissach sites by 2035, including production system adjustments required to continue manufacturing two-door sports cars in Zuffenhausen.
