Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 28, The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has awarded international technology group ANDRITZ a contract to modernise the pumped storage units at the Srinagarind hydropower plant in Kanchanaburi province. The project includes the replacement of two 180MW pump turbine units along with motor generators, electromechanical equipment, and auxiliaries. ANDRITZ will manage the supply, installation, and commissioning of the new systems. Valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, the contract will be recorded in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the second quarter of 2025.
Srinagarind, situated on the Kwai Yai River, is one of Thailand’s largest hydropower facilities, with a total capacity of 720MW derived from three Francis units and two pumped storage units. The plant provides base load power, peak load coverage, and grid balancing for the country’s electricity network. ANDRITZ previously modernised the plant’s Francis units in an earlier project, establishing a strong track record at the site.
ANDRITZ stated that the modernisation “will ensure efficient and reliable operation of the pumped storage units for many years to come,” reinforcing the plant’s key role in Thailand’s energy system. The company will leverage its manufacturing facilities in India and its global engineering network to deliver the project efficiently.
EGAT operates over 50 power plants across Thailand, with a total installed capacity exceeding 16,000MW, and is engaged in energy projects abroad. The organisation’s efforts at Srinagarind support Thailand’s renewable energy and grid reliability objectives.
With more than 50 years of experience in Thailand, ANDRITZ has contributed to nearly half of the country’s hydropower capacity through new installations and upgrades. The company noted that this repeat order “underlines ANDRITZ’s strong position in the Thai hydropower market and highlights its commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable energy solutions that support Thailand’s renewable energy goals.”
The modernisation of the Srinagarind pumped storage units is expected to enhance operational efficiency, extend equipment lifespan, and support the integration of renewable energy into Thailand’s electricity system. By improving grid flexibility, the project will allow the country to better manage peak demand and maintain stable electricity supply, further contributing to the nation’s sustainable energy development.
This upgrade also reflects ANDRITZ’s ongoing commitment to advanced hydropower solutions, combining technical expertise with local experience to deliver projects that strengthen national energy infrastructure and meet growing electricity demands in Thailand.
