Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 30, India's POWERGRID and the Nepal Electricity Authority have entered into Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreements to build high-capacity transmission lines across their border.

The planned infrastructure consists of two 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) links: one connecting Inaruwa in Nepal to New Purnea in India, and the other linking Lamki (Dododhara) in Nepal to Bareilly in India.

Upon completion, these transmission corridors will facilitate greater electricity exchange between the two countries, bolster energy security in the region, and enhance the stability of both national grids.

The agreements establish a collaborative framework for project execution, financing, and operation. POWERGRID brings expertise in large-scale transmission development, while the Nepal Electricity Authority contributes local knowledge and regulatory coordination.

These lines will enable efficient transfer of power generated from Nepal's hydropower resources to Indian load centers, and allow reverse flows during surplus periods in India. The Quad Moose conductor configuration supports high ampacity, minimizing losses over long distances.

Construction will involve detailed route surveys, environmental assessments, and coordination with local authorities on both sides. The projects align with bilateral efforts to integrate electricity markets and optimize resource utilization.

Enhanced connectivity reduces dependency on isolated generation and improves supply reliability during peak demand or outages. It also creates opportunities for future expansions in cross-border trade.

The initiatives reflect a shared commitment to sustainable energy infrastructure. By strengthening interconnections, India and Nepal aim to achieve mutual benefits in power availability and system efficiency.

Overall, the transmission links mark a significant step in regional cooperation, paving the way for seamless energy flows and greater operational synergy between the two networks.
