Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 3, The Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) has announced the development of the world’s largest rooftop solar power facility, in a partnership between industrial holding company Foulath Holding and Yellow Door Energy. The project, with a total capacity of 123 MWp, will include the largest single-site rooftop solar plant globally, rated at 50 MWp, featuring around 77,000 solar panels installed atop a 262,000 square metre stockyard facility.

Noor bint Ali Alkhulaif, Minister of Sustainable Development and CEO of Bahrain EDB, said: “Today, the island nation of Bahrain stands at the forefront of sustainable global innovation. We are incredibly proud of this transformative project – marking the largest rooftop solar plant in the world. This milestone not only strengthens our position as a regional leader in clean energy, but embodies our dedication to build a resilient, sustainable future in line with our national vision of elevating Bahrain’s international competitiveness.”

The full 123 MWp site will comprise ten rooftop solar plants and four ground-mounted installations, which are expected to significantly decarbonise Foulath Holdings’ steel production and contribute to Bahrain’s Net Zero 2060 target, according to Bahrain EDB. In total, the project will span more than 707,000 square metres with around 189,900 solar panels, aiming to generate approximately 200 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy in its first year of operation.

Sherif ElKholy, Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa at Actis and Chairman of Yellow Door Energy, commented: “Congratulations to Foulath Holding and Yellow Door Energy on this landmark PPA to develop the world’s largest single-site rooftop solar plant. I think this project proves how cost-competitive, clean energy can drive forward industry and set a new global benchmark for decarbonising steel production. As a leading investor in sustainable infrastructure and majority shareholder of Yellow Door Energy, we are proud to witness this signing and look forward to seeing this transformative project come to life.”

The Bahrain solar project highlights the country’s focus on sustainable industrial innovation and renewable energy deployment. By integrating rooftop and ground-mounted solar capacity, the initiative will not only reduce carbon emissions in steel production but also enhance energy resilience and support the country’s broader environmental and economic objectives.

With its scale, the project is expected to serve as a global benchmark for clean energy integration into industrial processes, demonstrating how renewable energy can simultaneously support decarbonisation goals, industrial growth, and energy security. The initiative also reinforces Bahrain’s position as a regional leader in sustainable infrastructure, showcasing the potential of innovative public-private partnerships to achieve large-scale clean energy outcomes.

Overall, this milestone in Bahrain reflects a strategic approach to industrial sustainability, combining cutting-edge renewable energy solutions with national development goals, while creating measurable impacts on energy consumption, emissions reduction, and long-term competitiveness.
