Wedoany.com Report-Dec.14, The German Federal Ministry of Transport has released an additional €3 billion for road infrastructure, enabling immediate advancement of numerous highway construction, widening, and maintenance projects across the country. The funding addresses a long-standing backlog of upgrades to the national Autobahn network and Federal highways, including urgent bridge rehabilitation works.

Germany will benefit from further road upgrades with additional funding being made available

Among the newly approved schemes is a 13 km section of the A20 coastal highway in Lower Saxony, connecting the A28 near Westerstede with the A29 at Jaderberg. Valued at approximately €340 million, this segment forms the first of seven planned phases that will eventually deliver a continuous 114 km route from Westerstede to Drochtersen. Autobahn GmbH des Bundes has now commenced detailed planning and preparatory activities.

In Saxony-Anhalt, financing has been confirmed for two further projects: the continuation of the A14 Autobahn between Osterburg and Seehausen (Altmark), and the construction of the B188 Miesterhorst bypass. Both schemes had previously been prioritised to improve regional connectivity and relieve local traffic congestion.

Additionally, the Ministry has authorised resumption and completion of the long-delayed six-lane widening of the A57 through Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia. Approximately €55 million has already been invested in preparatory works. The upgraded section will provide three continuous lanes in each direction, restoring the original design intent and significantly enhancing capacity on this heavily travelled corridor.

The comprehensive package also covers multiple bypass projects, bridge replacements, and general Autobahn widening initiatives that had been placed on hold due to earlier budget constraints. With the new €3 billion allocation now secured, contractors can proceed with tendering and site mobilisation in the coming months.

The investment programme reflects a systematic effort to modernise Germany's road transport network, improve safety on ageing infrastructure, and support efficient freight and passenger movement nationwide. Many of the approved projects are scheduled to enter active construction during 2026 and 2027, with phased completion extending through the early 2030s depending on individual scope and complexity.
