Wedoany.com Report-Dec.28, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) subsidiary Chinergy launched the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Modern Industrial Chain Alliance on December 11 in Beijing.

The alliance unites more than 60 organizations to foster collaboration in advancing fourth-generation nuclear energy technology. Its objectives include establishing a strategic partnership based on shared goals, responsibilities, benefits, and values, representing a significant step toward industrialization and joint innovation.

Activities will encompass research and design, fuel production, equipment manufacturing, construction, installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance, as well as international markets.

CNNC stated: "By pooling industry strengths, the alliance aims to advance High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) technology from single-purpose power generation toward diversified applications such as heating and hydrogen production. Priority will be given to breakthroughs in areas including petrochemical coupling and nuclear-based hydrogen production, accelerating the development of a 'nuclear+' zero-carbon integrated energy system. These efforts will provide HTGR-based solutions for China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, supporting green energy transition and industrial upgrading."

The initiative builds on recent progress in HTGR development. In September, a contract was signed for the conventional islands of three reactors, including a 660 MWe HTGR unit, forming the first phase of the Xuwei nuclear power project. This facility will deliver both industrial heating and electricity by integrating a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor with two pressurized water reactors.

Additionally, the High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor - Pebble-bed Module (HTR-PM) at Shidao Bay, also referred to as Shidaowan, achieved commercial operation in 2023.

In its launch announcement, CNNC noted: "China has now fully mastered the complete HTGR technology chain - from design and manufacturing to construction, commissioning, operation, and fuel cycle - along with all core intellectual property rights, achieving a transition from a follower to a global leader in this sector."

The alliance is expected to drive further advancements in safe, versatile nuclear energy applications, contributing to sustainable energy solutions and expanded industrial uses.
