Wedoany.com Report-Dec.28, Mexico's Energy Secretary, Luz Elena González Escobar, has approved 20 new renewable energy projects that will increase the country's installed generation capacity by up to 3,320 MW.

Of these projects, 15 are solar installations accounting for 2,471 MW, while the five remaining initiatives are wind farms contributing 894 MW to the national grid.

This decision follows an October call for proposals inviting private sector participation in developing up to 34 power plants with a total potential of 5,970 MW. The selected facilities have been identified as priorities under the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The approvals represent a renewal of activity in the renewable energy field following a six-year interval from 2018 to 2024 during which few new projects advanced.

Based on the initial timeline, about 19 percent of the projects are expected to start operations in 2027, 78 percent in 2028, and the remaining 3 percent in 2029.

The developments will be located across various states, promoting broader distribution of clean energy infrastructure. Private investment in these initiatives is anticipated to reach approximately US$4.75 billion, supporting construction and related enhancements to the electricity network.

This expansion strengthens Mexico's renewable energy portfolio, aiding efforts to meet rising electricity demand through sustainable sources.
