A tunnel renovation plan involving an investment of €1 billion in Frankfurt, Germany, has been approved. The project plans to renovate a roughly 1.3-kilometer section of highway in eastern Frankfurt, converting it into an open-cut tunnel.

The purpose of the project is to reduce the city's noise levels and alleviate traffic congestion through tunnel construction. Public green spaces are planned to be built above the tunnel. This renovation plan has been discussed for some time, and its budget has significantly increased from the initially proposed €350 million in 2019 to €1 billion.

Project funding will be jointly borne by the German federal government and the Hessian state government where the project is located. After the project's implementation, it is expected to effectively ease traffic pressure in the Riedwald area.
