A disused school building in the Parkhead area of Glasgow's East End is set to undergo a transformation into a residential development comprising 24 mid-market rent apartments. The project is being advanced by Wheatley Group in collaboration with Grant Murray Architects.

The conversion targets the former Newlands Public School (later known as the Newlands Centre). According to the plans, all apartments will be situated within the original teaching block, forming a compact residential scheme. Three of the apartments will face southeast, while the remaining units are designed with dual or triple aspects for natural light. To optimize space and lighting, the project involves removing non-original partition walls added after the school's closure in the 1970s. This will restore the original load-bearing spine wall structure, allowing the residential units to be arranged around the former classroom areas. To free up more floor space, a redundant lift shaft will be removed.

A central design feature is the reopening of the building's central atrium area (currently infilled at ground floor level) to introduce natural light. This will improve illumination for the stairwells, landings, and ground-floor communal spaces, enhancing the internal environment of the entire residential development. The architects emphasized in their design statement that this approach allows all dwellings to be designed within the existing window layout, avoiding overly deep floor plans and thereby minimizing demolition and structural alterations.

The residential project also includes landscaping the school grounds and plans to add a gated car park with 23 spaces adjacent to Springfield Road. Additionally, a separate janitor's house currently owned by another party on the site may be integrated into the development in the future for use as a standalone dwelling.
