Wedoany.com Report on Feb 2nd, To commemorate the United Nations Clean Energy Day on January 26, 2026, Nissan Motor Company unveiled the solar-powered Ariya concept vehicle. This model, jointly developed by engineers from Nissan's Advanced Product Planning team in Dubai and the Powertrain Planning team in Barcelona, showcases new explorations in the application of clean energy within the automotive industry.

This solar concept car is equipped with 3.8 square meters of high-efficiency solar panels integrated into the polymer-based hood, roof, and glass-based tailgate. These solar panels can convert sunlight into direct current, managed by an advanced controller, aiming to optimize energy use and reduce reliance on external charging facilities.

Nissan developed this solar technology in collaboration with the Dutch startup Lightyear. Preliminary test data indicates that for commuters traveling 6,000 kilometers annually, the integrated solar technology can reduce annual charging sessions from 23 to 8. Lightyear CEO Bonna Newman stated: "Collaboration with the global automotive industry proves our technology delivers measurable benefits for EV drivers; enabling them to go beyond the grid and reduce their dependency on plugging in."

Test results show that the Ariya vehicle can generate 0.5 kilowatt-hours of solar energy during a 2-hour, 80-kilometer journey, providing up to an additional 3 kilometers of range. Under clear weather conditions, the solar panels can generate enough clean energy to provide up to an additional 23 kilometers of range. Depending on the geographical location, the average daily additional range is 10.2 kilometers in London, 18.9 kilometers in New Delhi, and 21.2 kilometers in Dubai.

Tests conducted on demonstration vehicles indicate that, depending on usage patterns and conditions, charging frequency is reduced by 35% to 65%. For commuters traveling approximately 12,000 kilometers per year, the time between charges can be increased by about 50%. The system generates energy whether the vehicle is in motion or parked.

Lightyear CFO Herman van Barneveld said: "We have moved beyond the proof-of-concept phase." Jorge Paganetto from Nissan Dubai's Product Planning team believes it is important to view energy forms like solar as a potential paradigm shift, a concept that pushes the boundaries of what is possible.

Nissan AMIEO Vice President Shunsuke Shigmoto pointed out that the solar-powered Ariya concept embodies Nissan's belief that innovation and sustainable development must go hand in hand. He said: "By exploring how vehicles can generate their own renewable energy, we are opening new doors of opportunity for our customers – greater freedom, reduced charging dependency, and a cleaner future. This concept is not just a technological milestone, but a vision for Nissan to lead the next phase of electric mobility."
