Founded in 2018, Crusoe specializes in building and operating large-scale data centers for AI workloads. Earlier this month, the company disclosed that it has secured 4.9 GW of contracted capacity, with an overall project pipeline exceeding 40 GW, encompassing data centers still in tenant negotiations and sites in advanced stages of development. Crusoe's client list already includes Oracle, Microsoft, and Google. Its contracted projects include a campus in Abilene, Texas, built for Oracle and OpenAI, a data center supporting Microsoft, and a third site near Amarillo, Texas, already secured for Google. Despite strong overall momentum, Crusoe has also faced challenges on some projects—after negotiations for an early deal with Google fell through, Crusoe withdrew from a planned data center development project in Wyoming.
Meta is accelerating the expansion of its AI infrastructure, and this agreement with Crusoe is part of its strategy to diversify computing power sources. The company has previously committed to investing at least $600 billion in AI infrastructure over the coming years. Meta's largest single AI infrastructure project is located in Louisiana, a data center campus spanning nearly 4,000 acres with a planned capacity of up to 5 GW. Meta's platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, recently launched their first AI chatbot subscription service, seen as a key step in converting AI investments into commercial revenue.
