This digital infrastructure provider is laying over 1,000 miles of high-density fiber and conduit systems in Ohio and Indiana to expand its middle-mile network and strengthen the interconnection between the region's core data centers and edge facilities.
This fiber network construction is a significant development following Igneo Infrastructure Partners' $200 million investment in American Signal Company last year. The company plans to use these funds for new fiber builds and data center expansion projects. Currently, approximately 30% of the new fiber routes have been completed, with the remaining network expected to be fully operational by early 2027.
In a statement, Daniel Watts, CEO of American Signal Company, said, "Many providers talk about building for the future. We are building for now." He specifically noted that these routes are built entirely on new conduit and fiber, rather than being overlaid on existing infrastructure.
The fiber networks in Ohio and Indiana are designed as middle-mile infrastructure, specifically for connecting long-haul networks, regional aggregation points, and various data centers. The network utilizes multi-conduit systems and high-fiber-count cables, aiming to avoid potential capacity bottlenecks as AI workloads scale.
As artificial intelligence training and inference tasks continue to increase data traffic, many infrastructure providers are investing more in fiber density and physical optionality. The middle-mile network has become particularly critical, as it enables enterprises and service providers to efficiently transfer large datasets between data centers, reducing reliance on congested metro or long-haul paths.
American Signal Company stated that the new fiber network will directly interconnect its existing core data centers and support the future development of edge data centers along the fiber path. This architecture helps meet the demands of latency-sensitive AI applications, hybrid cloud deployments, and scalable transport needs from regional service providers.
The company offers services such as dark fiber, lit services, hosted connections, and cloud proximity infrastructure. It noted that the construction projects in Ohio and Indiana are just one phase of its broader multi-state expansion strategy. This fiber network construction will further enhance the digital infrastructure level in the Midwest, supporting the development of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
