Wedoany.com Report on Feb 11th, The Government of Catalonia is accelerating the advancement of a new regional development strategy for industrial and logistics land, aiming to promote the growth of economic activities through optimized land use. This plan, based on principles of territorial rebalancing, sectoral prioritization, and environmental sustainability, seeks to allocate large plots in areas with good transportation access and well-developed infrastructure, while adjusting or reducing planned areas that remain undeveloped and do not meet current needs.

Statistical data shows that Catalonia currently possesses a significant amount of qualified industrial land that is not yet fully utilized. Specifically, there are 1,480 zones with a total area exceeding 14,000 hectares, of which the development potential is approximately 8,477 hectares. However, about 78% (equivalent to 6,610 hectares) of this land remains idle, particularly in areas such as the Vallès, Baix Llobregat, Plana de Tarragona, and Ponent.
Regional authorities point out that the existing qualified land lacks sufficient large-scale plots to meet current demands. Therefore, the strategy emphasizes activating and consolidating existing industrial development projects when necessary, reducing undeveloped and poorly located land through urban planning adjustments, and creating new zones to provide larger-scale plots.
The strategy revolves around four main axes. First, an interdepartmental coordination committee will be established to expedite urban planning processes related to industrial land. Second, territorial needs will be analyzed based on objective data to inform the layout of new large-scale industrial land, with priority support given to development projects jointly promoted by multiple municipalities. Third, the planning for existing undeveloped industrial land will be adjusted to comply with current regulations, promoting its transformation or downgrading. Finally, the strategy also aims to monitor industrial land demand across the entire Catalonia region and attract new participants for site development.
