On the morning of February 13th, a ceremony was held to mark the opening of the Zhuhai Tunnel, which officially opened to public traffic at noon. The Zhuhai Tunnel project is a key initiative to alleviate traffic pressure between the eastern and western parts of Zhuhai. The main line starts east of the Zhuhai Bridge and ends west of it, spanning approximately 5 kilometers. It features a two-way, six-lane design with a speed limit of 80 km/h, and integrates ventilation, lighting, fire protection, and intelligent monitoring systems. The opening of this tunnel marks the formation of a new "north bridge, south tunnel" parallel traffic pattern connecting Zhuhai's eastern and western urban areas.

The Zhuhai Tunnel was constructed using a combination of the mining method and the shield tunneling method. After passing under the Guadingjiao Mountain using the mining method, it continues westward under the embankment before entering the central section of the Modaomen Waterway via the shield tunneling segment. The project, managed by Zhuhai Transportation Control Group and constructed by China Railway Tunnel Group, commenced in December 2020 and overcame technical challenges such as large-diameter shield tunneling in soft soil and high-water-pressure sealing. City leaders attended the opening ceremony. After opening, mainline traffic on Zhuhai Avenue can enter the Zhuhai Tunnel to pass underwater, while auxiliary lane traffic can cross the Modaomen Waterway via the Zhuhai Bridge. The drive through takes only about 5 minutes, directly linking Xiangzhou District, Jinwan District, and Doumen District, thereby diverting traffic pressure from the Zhuhai Bridge.

On both the eastern and western banks, two-way, six-lane auxiliary roads are set up on either side of the main line. The outermost lane is designated for buses, and separate bicycle lanes and sidewalks are provided outside the auxiliary roads. The auxiliary roads span 1.667 kilometers with a design speed of 50 km/h. The Zhuhai Tunnel offers all-weather passage, ensuring safe and smooth traffic even under severe weather conditions like typhoons, thereby enhancing the reliability of the city's transportation system. It is reported that the tunnel is divided into lanes for small vehicles and lanes shared by small and large vehicles. Multiple transverse tunnels are set up for emergency evacuation, with a total of 58 escape staircases in the shield tunneling segment leading to the lower-level evacuation passage beneath the lanes. According to relevant approvals from the Zhuhai Development and Reform Bureau, following the opening of the Zhuhai Tunnel, the Zhuhai Bridge will undergo a 23-month maintenance and reinforcement period.
