On February 23, LyondellBasell publicly announced an adjustment to its 2030 climate and circularity goals. Influenced by multiple factors including strict capital allocation controls, changes in the market environment, and evolving regulations, the company has revised its original targets. The new sustainability goals remain challenging but place greater emphasis on balancing with short-term achievable needs to ensure the robust advancement of the strategy. The company emphasized that its core strategic framework—including growing and upgrading the core business, building profitable circular and low-carbon businesses, and optimizing performance and culture—remains unchanged.
To achieve these strategic directions, LyondellBasell has formulated specific updated measures. In terms of greenhouse gas reduction, the company plans to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 32% from the 2020 baseline, a decrease from the previously set target of 42%. Simultaneously, in the area of circularity, the company aims to produce and sell 800,000 tonnes of recycled and renewable-based polymers by 2030, down from the previous target of 2 million tonnes.
LyondellBasell also revealed that it is currently advancing the construction of the MoReTec-1 plant. This facility will be the first commercial-scale catalytic pyrolysis chemical recycling plant utilizing the company's proprietary MoReTec technology, marking a significant step in the application of innovative recycling technologies. The company explicitly stated that these adjustments to the sustainability goals will not impact any existing supply commitments or commercial contracts, aiming to ensure business continuity and the stability of customer relationships.
