Chinese Research Team Successfully Prepares Storage-Stable Waterborne Polyester, Optimizing Coating Performance

Wedoany.com Report on Mar 9th, A recent study from China reports on the preparation and performance optimization of a waterborne polyester resin (WPE) with good storage stability. Based on Newman's "Rule of Six", the researchers selected neopentyl glycol (NPG) as the alcohol component and trimellitic anhydride (TMA) as the hydrophilic monomer, successfully synthesizing this resin. The study comprehensively characterized the chemical structure and physical properties of the WPE using various techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG).Research data visualization

Experimental data revealed the influence of reactant type and content on the properties of the waterborne polyester resin. As the TMA content increased, the acid value and molecular weight of the WPE showed an upward trend, and the molecular weight distribution range broadened. Concurrently, the maximum weight loss rate temperature and glass transition temperature (Tg) also increased, but storage stability decreased. After cross-linking treatment, coatings made from the WPE exhibited superior water resistance, higher gloss, and greater hardness with increasing trimethylolpropane (TMP) content.

The study found that when the TMA and TMP contents were controlled at 8% and 12% respectively, the waterborne polyester resin demonstrated the best overall performance. Ultimately, the researchers successfully prepared a WPE with suitable acid value, controllable molecular weight, good storage stability, and ideal coating film properties. This achievement provides a new technical reference for the coatings and materials science fields and is expected to promote the development of waterborne polyester resins in industrial applications.
