Wedoany.com Report on Mar 9th, Thyssenkrupp Uhde has recently signed an agreement with Nova Sustainable Fuels to conduct an integration and optimization study for a large-scale biomass-to-methanol project in Nova Scotia, Canada, helping to advance Canada's progress in scaling up low-carbon fuel production.Green Methanol Project

The study will focus on evaluating Thyssenkrupp Uhde's integrated process solution, which combines gasification and methanol synthesis technologies, utilizing sustainable woody biomass resources. It is projected to produce over 450,000 tonnes of methanol annually.

The project plans to employ Uhde's PRENFLO gasification technology and advanced methanol synthesis process. By deploying both technologies from a single supplier, Nova Sustainable Fuels aims to validate the benefits of full-system integration while enhancing the project's financing viability. The study results will provide a critical basis for subsequent investment decisions.

Nova Sustainable Fuels is committed to producing low-carbon fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel and renewable methanol to drive decarbonization in the transportation sector. The project facility will integrate over 1 gigawatt of renewable electricity from planned solar and wind farms, utilizing local sustainable biomass and water resources to build a clean energy system.

The renewable methanol produced by the project will help reduce global shipping emissions and can serve as a low-carbon feedstock for products like sustainable aviation fuel and chemicals. Following the acquisition of all permits, construction is expected to commence in 2028, with the target of becoming operational in 2031. The project received its initial environmental assessment approval in December 2025.

Nadja Håkansson, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Uhde, stated: "Decarbonizing chemicals and fuels is one of the key challenges of our time and an area we care deeply about. Sustainable methanol plays a crucial role in building a cleaner energy and industrial future."

"We are proud to contribute decades of experience and integrated solutions to help turn this vision into reality. Collaborating with Nova Sustainable Fuels on this forward-looking project is a significant step towards a low-carbon future." Andrew Parsons of Nova Sustainable Fuels added: "We are pleased to partner with Thyssenkrupp Uhde, whose team brings extensive experience and a track record of successfully delivering complex projects. This collaboration strengthens confidence in the project's long-term success and highlights the positive momentum of its progress."
